SUMMARY:Spring Hike at Upper Salt Creek

Join California Naturalist Juliet Malik for a walk along the Upper Salt Creek Trail to observe and identify flowering plants. We will also talk about the pollinators that choose these flowers and why. So grab your hiking essentials and join us for some nerdy\, nature-loving time together! \nThis is an easy out-and-back trail for most. Round trip is about 3 miles with approximately 100ft in elevation gain. We will meet at the trailhead where Valparaiso Way meets Lower Springs Road. The parking lot is very small so please consider carpooling with friends. \nPlease come prepared with water\, sun/rain protection\, sturdy footwear\, hiking poles if desired\, a snack\, and anything else you like to use to observe nature\, i.e. binoculars\, hand lens\, etc.  \nSevere weather cancels. Please fill out this form to sign our waiver and be added to the contact list for updates. \nFor any questions\, email juliet@ecoshasta.org.

SUMMARY:Families in the Forest
DESCRIPTION:Join SEA volunteers Holly White-Wolfe and Juliet Malik—California Naturalists —for a special educational outing designed for families with young children. The event is designed for children\, their siblings\, parents\, grandparents or other caregivers to enjoy together.  \nWe’ll explore the benefits of time in nature by stimulating our senses with sights\, sounds\, scents\, and other soothing qualities of the natural world. Studies suggest that just two hours per week in nature is linked to better health and well-being (Weir\, 2020). Nature can help reduce stress\, improve mental clarity\, and boost overall well-being (Grinde and Patil\, 2009).   \nWe’ll take a break for story time on our picnic blankets. Our special guest\, a local gnome\, will share how to identify local mountains\, waters\, and plants. He’ll guide us through how we can start to notice more together. \nCome along with us while we build a sense of belonging to a community that cares for its ecosystem. \nEvent Details: \nPlease no dogs except service dogs on a leash–this helps us better observe living creatures. \nWalking will be on mostly flat surfaces in easy-to-hike terrain. Surfaces may be uneven\, so hiking boots or closed-toe walking shoes are recommended.  \nEvent will be cancelled in the event of a storm.  \nPrepare for the event: \n\nREQUIRED: Register for the event and sign the waiver form here. (Children must be accompanied by an adult. A registration form is needed for each adult and child.)\nPlease bring a picnic blanket\, water\, and a snack.\nWear layers of clothing\, a hat\, and walking shoes (close-toed).\n\nLearn more about the benefits of “forest bathing” (intentionally spending time in nature) here.   \nAny questions? SUMMARY:Free for All ~ Thing Swap
DESCRIPTION:Join the Shasta Environmental Alliance and the Western Shasta Resource Conservation District for a lively “Free for All ~ Thing Swap”—a morning of sharing\, treasure‑hunting\, and community connection. Bring gently used items you no longer need\, set them out for others to enjoy\, and browse the tables to see what useful or delightful things you might take home. \nThing swaps are a simple\, joyful way to care for our ecosystem by reducing consumption\, extending the life of everyday items\, and keeping usable goods out of the landfill. They also strengthen community ties—every shared object becomes a small act of generosity that helps neighbors meet neighbors. \nEvent Details \nYou may place your giveaway items on the tables provided or bring your own. Please label any personal tables as “not part of swap” so they return to their owners at the end of the event. \nParticipants are responsible for removing any unclaimed items they brought. Event organizers cannot provide disposal or cleanup services. \nAfter you’ve finished setting out and collecting items\, stay to enjoy informal community activities—games\, raffles\, and opportunities to connect with others who care about reducing waste and building a resilient local community. \nPlease\, no pets except service dogs on a leash.\n \n**Parking is limited near the WSRCD building\, so carpooling is encouraged.** \nPrepare for the Event \n\nClean out your garage\, shed\, and closets. Look for items you haven’t used in a year\, things that feel like clutter\, or items someone else could put to good use. Unused seed packets\, extra garden tools\, plastic pots\, bikes\, skates\, camping gear\, kitchen items\, books\, art supplies—almost anything can find a new home.\nPack your items for easy transport. Bring boxes or bags you can carry from the unloading area to the tables\, which may be a few hundred feet away.\nLabel items that are not part of the swap. Mark tarps\, tables\, boxes\, or other containers you plan to take home.\nBring a bag or box for treasures you collect. Label it with your name so others know your gathered items are no longer available for swapping.\n\nAny questions? Contact ren@ecoshasta.org
